Well, we have to admit to using Google Plus more and more- the social network from the famous search engine.
Why? Well, for one, the design is less cluttered than Facebook, and with each iteration and update it gets more and more powerful. They really seem to be getting the network into a higher gear.
However, there are a few things that really annoy us about Google+ though. Such as:
1. The “What’s Hot” posts that automatically appear in your stream without you opting in to them. Don’t ram it down our throats, Google.
2. There’s no-one on Google Plus! Well, that’s a complete over-exaggeration of course. The network seems to be more popular with technically minded people, and business users right now, but that might change. It hasn’t reached the tipping point for your average social network user.
3. The newest Google plus version has a 2 column stream as default now, a bit like Facebook. That was one of the reasons I preferred the design of Google + to Facebook in the first place……..(luckily you can change it back, see below)
So specifically, on the What’s Hot stream. The whole of G+ was updated in May 2013 (version 2.0?), so the procedure to delete “What’s Hot” out of your stream has changed as well.
Here’s what you have to do now:
How to Remove “What’s Hot From Your Stream in Google +
1. Sign in to Google+
2. Hover over the top left “Home” link- you should see the nav menu drop down.
3. Click on “What’s Hot”
4. Top right of What’s Hot, click on the settings icon which is a little cog thingy
5. You can now untick the box that says “Show Posts in Home Stream”. By the way, if you do want to continue receiving the “Google Believe it or Not” time waster posts, you can adjust the frequency to “more, standard or fewer”.
OK- that’s What’s Hot sent to the sin bin. How about changing to a one column feed.
How to Change Your Google Plus Feed Back to One Column
1. Go to the Google + home and sign in if you haven’t already.
2. Select More
3. Change the stream design here.
Credit where credit’s due, they are at least giving you the choice to personalise this stuff. I just don’t happen to agree with the default settings, but then I am not charged with trying to grow the network. Don’t be evil Google!
